Who was Jesus Christ?
Here lies with me an image of a man whose advent marked the universal reference point of transition. Born into a society that, in turn, fervently desired his coming, curiously followed his development, were increasingly polarized by his presentation of, “Love God and your neighbor.”, and, “Follow Me!”, and finally, moved to reject and assassinate his physical being. Somehow, His message of compassion for and peace among men has been adapted and co-opted into a credo for countless members of religious sects through the past, more or less, 2010 years.
Unarguably, the most influential man who ever lived. Certainly, “The Lord”, in the spiritual consciousness of countless people. One can make a case that His teachings present great wisdom for living in relationship. Who is Jesus Christ? It may be even more interesting to consider the question literally. It is posed in the present tense. His followers, then, testified that He returned from death to physical life among them. Despite attempts by skeptics and critics to disprove and denounce their credibility.
Psalms 97:1-6 says, "The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory."
Jesus said of his purpose, "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." In the book of Matthew, Jesus says, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance." The Bible attributes this phenomenon to the fact that Jesus is God. His message is love, and as 1 John 4:8 tells us, God is love. Although His message and His acts were selfless, His teaching focused on Himself. "Follow me;" "I am the light;" "I am the way the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me."
